Golf Betting Markets
There are many more golf markets than you will realize if you haven’t taken a look through them before. The many different ways you can get your money down on an event is what makes it exciting for the betting market and to give you an idea of the things you can do, look at the betting markets below and click on any market to get a description on how it works.
Outright Winner
Outright/Winner betting is the most common golf betting market and a great starting point for newcomers to golf betting. With large fields taking part in the events, you can always expect a good price on your selection, with the favourite generally starting at odds of 10/1 and upwards. Back in the day of Tiger Woods and even Rory Mcilroy a few years ago you would see them as short as 3/1 but generally with the competition between the top players the prices are bigger.
Back an outsider and you can get odds of 1000/1 to plus, find one of these players even a place will pay out big. But of course, they do pop up rarely but it is possible. That is why it is advisable to back each way with a field of 150 golfers all looking for that win it makes sense. On regular tournaments, you would most of the time only be paid out for the first 5 places but for special events such as the four majors (The Masters, The Open, US Open & US PGA) they will increase the places to as much as 10 places as is the case for The Players Championship.
1st Round Leader
When betting on the 1st round leader it is important to know what golfers like to get off to a fast start and these stats can be found on the PGATour website by trawling through previous tournaments you can get a feel for those that play well in the first couple of rounds and those that play steady throughout the tournament. It works the same way as the outright winner betting market with the difference being that is over the 1st round only. Whereas traditionally a tournament will be over four rounds.
There are some great golf offers out there on this particular market. For instance, at Betway Sports if you back a golfer to win the tournament and he leads after the 1st round they will pay you out as if he has won the whole shebang. Please note this will not apply to every golf tournament so please check before placing your outright bets to see if this offer applies.
Top Finish
The Top Finish market is all about hedging your bets. If you are unsure if your player can win the tournament you can place a bet that he will finish in the Top 5, Top 10 or even the Top 20. Obviously, the odds shorten greatly as you get to the top 20 betting market.
So, for example, let us take Jason Day at The Players a Top 5 finish would net you odds of 10/3. But if you backed him to finish in the Top 10 his odds would shorten to 7/4 with the odds being odds-on at 8/11 for a Top 20 finish. Day will always be near the top of all the betting list but pick a decent golfer who you think will be Top 20 and you can still get decent odds.
Big Guns v The Field
Betting on the Big Guns vs The Field means that you will have more golfers playing for your money. The “Big Guns” are usually the 5-6 highest ranked players in the tournament who are expected to perform well and have a great chance of winning. The “Field” means all the other golfers left which could be as many as 150 plus. Now the odds vary on this from event to event. So for our example, we shall use this year’s Players Championship where the big guns are represented by J Day, J Thomas, J Spieth, D Johnson, R Fowler, R McIlroy and are priced up at 2/1. If you do not think any of these golfers will win then you can get 1/3 for any other golfer to win.
Group Betting
Now the Group Betting will see four golfers of a similar ranking pitted against each other and whoever finishes highest at the end of the tournament will be deemed the winner of their group. The example below is also from The Players but highlights exactly how closely matched these golfers are. So this is how Group A looks before the event has started.
Jason Day 12/5 Rory McIlroy 12/5 Jordan Spieth 13/5 Dustin Johnson 11/4
The great thing about betting on who will finish top of their respective groups is that you can include other groups and make a multiple whether it be a double, treble or higher.
Make The Cut / Miss The Cut
This one is pretty self-explanatory but for those that do not know here, we go. On each 72 hole stroke play tournament, there is a cut off usually after 36 holes (half way). This cut off will see dependant on how many in the field half the field missing the cut, meaning they will no longer take part and will not receive any of the prize money. Although this will differ in some of the majors as qualifying for a major will see you paid out something.
So after 36 holes, only half the field will carry on for the final 36 holes to try and lift the trophy. So this betting market is simple if you fancy a player to make the cut then back him to do so, but if you think he will play poorly and miss the cut then you have that option too. This is another market which is suitable for multiple bets as the odds are a lot shorter when it is just the two options.
Top Regional Player
This is similar to the group betting as players are set into specific betting markets, but instead of going by their rankings it is done on what part of the world they originate. Some regional markets will have a lot more players such as the US region as most players on the PGA Tour are American. Whereas picking a Scottish winner at The Players will only give you two golfers to pick from. Each way betting is allowed as long as there is the required amount of golfers in the region.
Here are some of the regions you can pick for: Top US Player, Top European, Top Australian, Top English, Top Asian and many more. Just be careful as some players may be in more than one region, for example, a Scottish player will be in the Top Scottish and Top European markets.
Betting With Out
This one is similar to the Big Guns as it is generally these same golfers that are removed from the outright winners market, which results in a more evenly spread betting market. You will find the odds on each player will be a few points down from if you were backing the same player in the outright market. But this could be worthwhile as there are usually some quality players to back now that the favs are gone.
