What Are Casino Bonuses?

A casino bonus is something that online casinos offer to players to ‘entice’ them into joining. Some players mistakenly coin bonuses ‘free money’. While it’s easy to see why they come to that conclusion, in reality, any kind of welcome offer or loyalty bonus will come with terms and conditions attached, in order to minimise the casino’s liability. We’ll cover details of this a little later on in this post. First, let’s take a look at some of the different types of casino bonuses you can expect to find.

Types Of Welcome Offers Available

There are a large number of different types of bonuses, and below, we will look at some of the most common ones that you’ll see online.

Matched Deposit Bonus

Matched deposit bonuses are the most common (and popular) form of bonus you’ll find online, and they are generally offered to new players, when they first join an online casino. A matched deposit bonus usually means your initial deposit amount will be ‘matched’ by the casino. This is usually either 100%, 200%, or 300%.

For example, a 100% matched deposit bonus would mean the casino double your first deposit. So, if you were to deposit £20, the casino would match this by 100%, bringing your total casino balance up to £40. In another example, if you deposited £20 on a 300% matched deposit bonus, your casino account would be credited with £60 in total.

No Deposit Bonus

No deposit bonuses aren’t as common as they once were, but they can still be found at some casinos. A no deposit bonus (as the name probably hints towards) is a bonus where you don’t need to make a deposit in order to claim. Some casinos will simply require you to sign up and confirm your email/phone number, and once you’ve done so, you’ll get a small amount of free cash in your account to play with. Usually, winnings from no deposit bonuses are capped – but they’re still a pretty good way to have a go at the slots and casino games without needing to risk any of your own cash!

Free Spins Bonuses

Free spins bonuses are becoming a lot more common, and this is in light of recent changes from the UK’s Gambling Commission, that see normal matched deposit bonuses losing attractiveness due to too many terms and conditions. Free spins bonuses are pretty self-explanatory, and simply credit your account with a number of free-spins. This can be after making a deposit, or, in some cases, they can be awarded without making a deposit either. Like no deposit bonuses, winnings from free-spins bonuses are usually capped, and wagering requirements are also normally applied.

Loyalty Bonuses

Loyalty bonuses are awarded to existing players that play regularly. They’re kind of like rewards – but the way in which loyalty bonuses are offered differs greatly. For example, some online casinos will offer loyalty bonuses in the form of a matched deposit bonus, while others will offer cashback. Free spins can also be offered – and some online casinos even go as far as to offer free, withdraw able cash! Generally, the more you play, the better the loyalty bonuses will be, and it’s always worth checking with the online casino you play at to find out the details of their loyalty bonuses promotions.

Bonus Terms and Conditions

As you may already know, almost all casino bonuses will come with terms and conditions attached. Below, we’re going to take a look at some of the most common terms you’re likely to come across.

Wagering Requirements

Almost all online casinos attach what are known as wagering requirements to their bonuses. Wagering requirements are designed to ‘protect’ the casinos from bonus abuse – and while they may sound annoying at first, they’re actually pretty important to ensure that casino can continue awarding bonuses.

Wagering requirements simply mean that you need to play through a bonus a certain number of times. For instance, if a casino bonus comes with a 30X wagering requirements attached, it means that you need to play through the bonus funds a total of 30X before they’re become eligible to withdraw. Before the wagering requirements are met, the casino bonus funds will be ‘locked’ as a bonus, and this means – that while you’ll see the bonus funds in your account – they won’t be withdraw able.

Game Exclusions/Restrictions

Most casinos will list in their bonus terms and conditions that not all games can be played with bonus funds. For example, some of the most popular video slots like Dead or Alive, The Wishmaster, and White Rabbit are usually excluded from being used with bonus funds. The reason behind this, can either be a really high return to player (RTP), or simply the fact that they’re progression-based games, and it would be unfair to allow players to use a bonus on these games.

You should always check the full terms and conditions attached to a bonus to find out which games – if any – are excluded from being used with bonus funds.

Game Weighting

Some games contribute different amounts to the wagering requirements than others. For example, table games like Blackjack, Baccarat and Roulette usually only contribute 10% to the wagering requirements, while slot machine games contribute a full 100%. This is down to the fact that casino table games usually have a much smaller house edge.

Maximum Bet

When you play with bonus funds, you’ll usually only be allowed to bet up to £5 per hand/spin/game. Some online casinos have special software in place to prevent you from betting any higher than this – but others don’t, so you should always be careful of your bet amount, and make sure it’s in-line with the rules of the bonus you’ve claimed.

Payment Method Exclusions

Almost all online casinos have payment methods exclusions. This usually means EWallets like Skrill and Neteller are ineligible to claim most casino bonuses. While this may sound unfair, at first, it’s all down to the fact that casinos have been hit by multiplier ‘bonus abuser groups’ who go out of their way to get as many bonuses as possible from casinos, often using illegitimate payment methods. Thankfully, you’ll always be able to use debit and credit cards to claim a casino bonus. Some online casinos also allow bonuses to be claimed with other payment methods (and very occasionally, other EWallets like PayPal), but you’ll need to check directly with the casino you’re interested in playing at to find out whether they do accept these methods or not.

All online casinos – by law – must clearly display the full terms and conditions attached to any of their bonuses, so if you’re ever unsure about something, or want to double check, you can have a quick read of these terms.
