World Cup 2018 Preview
There is not much time left before football’s biggest event – the FIFA World Cup – kicks off in Russia. 32 national teams and their thousands of supporters will gather in few days to witness one of the biggest spectacles in the world of sports.
The tournament will begin when hosts Russia take on Saudi Arabia in a Group A match on 14th June. The group stage will continue for a couple of weeks before culminating on 28th June. Here’s our lowdown on all eight groups, their respective members and top betting odds to win the group.
Group A
Participating Teams: Egypt, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay
Uruguay are the obvious favourites to top Group A. The South American nation lifted the famous old trophy in 1930 and 1950, and they have reasserted themselves as a footballing power in last eight years. La Celeste made it to the semi-finals in 2010, and they bowed out in the last-16 in 2014.
Russia have never made it to the knockout stages of the World Cup in their current guise, but they have the home advantage this time around. More often than not, hosts have done well at World Cups in the past.
Egypt have qualified for World Cup for the first time since 1990. They are not expected to qualify, but they do have a world-class player in Mohamed Salah who can win games on his own.
Saudi Arabia have qualified for World Cup for the fifth time. In their previous three attempts, they have failed to pick up a win.
Predictions – Uruguay to win the group, and Russia to qualify
URUGUAY TO WIN THE GROUP BEST PRICED 4/5 WITH LADBROKES
Group B
Participating Nations: Iran, Morocco, Portugal and Spain
There are two clear favourites for qualification from Group B in Portugal and Spain. However, there will be an interesting battle between these two European the heavyweights for top spot in the group.
La Roja have a point to prove following consecutive disappointing major tournaments. Spain bowed out in the group stage in 2014 after heavy defeats to the Netherlands and Chile. However, they shouldn’t have any problem in progressing past the group stage in Russia.
Portugal heads to Russia on the back of success at Euro 2016. Like Spain, the Portuguese side is also full of recognizable names, but Cristiano Ronaldo should be their main star once again.
Morocco will make their first appearance at the FIFA World Cup in twenty years. It will be a huge occasion for the North African nation, but we don’t expect them to move past the group stage.
Iran have managed just one win in their previous four appearances. In 2014, they could manage only one point from a goalless draw against Nigeria in the group stage and finished bottom of their group.
Predictions: Spain to win and Portugal to qualify
SPAIN TO WIN THE GROUP BEST PRICED 1/2 WITH BETWAY
Group C
Participating Nations: Australia, Denmark, France and Peru
A lot has already been written about the wealth of talent in the France squad. Les Bleus are one of the favourites to lift the trophy, and they shouldn’t have any problem winning Group C. France were the losing finalists at Euro 2016, and they have the talent to go one step further in Russia.
Denmark had to beat the Republic of Ireland in the playoffs to book their spot at World Cup. The Danes have appeared at four World Cups in total, and they have managed to make it to the knockouts three times. Tottenham star Christian Eriksen will pull the strings for the Danish team.
Both Australia and Peru will be huge underdogs in Group C. Australia finished behind Japan and Saudi Arabia in their qualifying group, and they were required to beat Syria and Honduras in two separate playoffs to book a place at the finals. Peru comes into the tournament after defeating New Zealand in the play-offs. The South American side are returning to the World Cup following a gap of 36 years.
Predictions: France to win the group, and Denmark to finish in the second spot
FRANCE TO WIN THE GROUP BEST PRICED 3/10 WITH CORAL
Group D
Participating Nations: Argentina, Croatia, Iceland and Nigeria
We are expecting some interesting encounters in Group D. Lionel Messi-led Argentina should win the group but the remaining three sides are expected to challenge for the second spot. The Argentines have lost their last three major finals including the final in 2014. Messi will be even more desperate to finally win a trophy with his national side.
Croatia should claim the second spot according to the betting market. However, they have bowed out at the group stage in their last three attempts at the World Cup. The talented Croatian side also finished behind Iceland in their qualifying group.
Iceland may not contain as many star players, but they have suddenly become a force in world football. They amazed everyone at Euro 2016, but a repeat of that performance in Russia shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Nigeria will also have a say in the group. They have some serious talent, and they have also defeated Argentina in a recent friendly outing.
Predictions: Argentina to top the group, and Nigeria not to qualify
ARGENTINA TO WIN THE GROUP BEST PRICED 8/11 WITH BETFAIR
Group E
Participating Nations: Brazil, Costa Rica, Serbia, Switzerland
Brazil are overwhelming favourites to win the group, and they should do so easily. However, there doesn’t appear to be a clear favourite among the remaining three for the second spot in the group.
Since 2002, Costa Rica have become a regular at World Cup, missing out just once. However, they surprised everyone in 2014 with a quarter-final finish. Their squad consists mostly of players playing in North American leagues. Keylor Navas and Joel Campbell are among the most recognizable names in their squad.
Serbia topped their qualifying group ahead of the Republic of Ireland, Wales and Austria to book their second appearance at World Cup. The Serbian side have some valuable experience in Nemanja Matic, Aleksandar Kolarov and Branislav Ivanovic.
Switzerland are known for their pragmatic football, and they often manage to sneak out of their group in major tournaments. The Swiss side also contains some world class players, and they are favourites in the betting market to progress alongside Brazil.
Predictions: Brazil to win the group and Costa Rica to failed to make it to the knockout stages
BRAZIL TO WIN THE GROUP BEST PRICED 4/11 WITH PADDYPOWER
Group F
Participating Nations: Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Sweden
Current champions Germany haven’t been in great form this year. But we expect them to return to their best in World Cup. It will be a monumental task for Joachim Loew’s men to defend their title in Russia. Nevertheless, they should win their group comfortably.
Mexico are making their seventh consecutive appearance at World Cup, and they have progressed beyond the group stage in each of their last seven appearances at the tournament. That is quite an extraordinary statistic about El Tri, who are also favourites to qualify in the betting market.
South Korea have participated in each of last eight World Cups, but they have progressed into the knockout rounds on only two occasions. Tottenham striker Son Heung-min is the Koreans standout player.
Sweden will be without Zlatan Ibrahimović in Russia. The Swedes have qualified for the event following an absence of 12 years. The Scandinavian side lacks a matchwinner, and that could hurt their chances.
Predictions: Germany to win the group and Mexico to qualify
GERMANY TO WIN THE GROUP BEST PRICED 4/11 WITH BETFRED
Group G
Participating Nations: Belgium, England, Panama and Tunisia
Group G looks like a straightforward group in terms of qualification. Belgium and England should qualify, but they will have to battle it out for the top spot.
The Belgium side is laden with world class players, and they are favourites to win the group, ahead of England.
The Three Lions will once again arrive in a major tournament with big expectations. England have often disappointed in major tournaments, and they crashed in the group stage in 2014. Their defeat to Iceland at Euro 2016 was equally disappointing. However, they should at least make it to the last-16 in Russia.
Panama are making their debut at World Cup and are the major underdogs of the group.
Tunisia have not played in a World Cup since 2006. In their previous four appearances at World Cups, they have managed only one win.
Predictions: Belgium to top the group and England to qualify
BELGIUM TO WIN THE GROUP BEST PRICED 5/6 WITH CORALS
Group H
Participating Nations: Colombia, Japan, Poland and Senegal
Group H is one of the closest groups at this summer’s World Cup. Colombia have world-class players such as James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao, and they are favourites to win the group. Los Cafeteros were among the quarter-finalists in Brazil 2014. However, they don’t enjoy an illustrious history at World Cup and have progressed beyond the group stage on only two occasions.
Poland have missed the last two World Cups following their group stage exit in 2006. Star player Robert Lewandowski will carry his side’s hopes in his first World Cup. Wojciech Szczęsny and Arkadiusz Milik are other big names in the Polish squad.
Japan will make their sixth consecutive appearance at World Cup. The Asian nation have produced shocks in the World Cup before, and they are capable of producing another one in Russia. Shinji Okazaki and Shinji Kagawa will be their main stars.
Senegal shocked everyone in the footballing world with their debut in 2002. However, it took them another 16 years to return to the biggest stage in football. Sadio Mane, Idrissa Gueye, Cheikhou Kouyaté and Kalidou Koulibaly are the key players in the Senegalese squad.
Predictions: Colombia to win the group, and Japan to crash out in the group stage.
